The politics of spectacle

The politics of spectacle

By: Cristiana Guevara Mena

«Panem et circenses» (literally "bread and circus") is a Latin phrase always used pejoratively to describe the practice of a government keeping its population calm or hiding objectionable or controversial facts, by providing food and low-quality entertainment for the masses. Originally, it described the custom of the Roman emperors giving away wheat and circus games (which consisted of chariot races, gladiator battles, and watching Christians torn by wild beasts and other animals) as a way to keep the people distracted from politics. Julius Cesar would distribute wheat for free, or sell it very cheaply, to about 200,000 poor plebeians.

In Nicaragua, ever since the current government officially continued in power, there have been an increasing number of diversions brought from abroad. Clearly, it’s aimed at the working class capable of paying the price of the ticket for the show. It’s not about cursing such entertainments, but about stopping and thinking about how politically convenient it is that this entertainment coincides with the interests of the ruling class. If we know the historical and political context in which we live, we know very well that nothing that happens is mere coincidence.

Also, on a smaller scale, we have seen throughout the past six years, the number of amusement parks and piñata parties for children, bus rides full of people to the square to hear speeches on days like July 19 and any other day considered worthy to "celebrate" in exchange for food and liquor. Likewise, to do honor to the concept of bread and circuses of the Roman era, we cannot fail to mention the virtual soccer stadiums that present the Spanish league on large screen sets as the trend of entertainment.

Let’s remember also the "praying people" of the roundabouts with large speakers blaring, full of people who work for wages for the Party, and students from public schools forced to attend. These same students are also used for political campaigning during elections of any kind. This shows that the purpose of government is not to educate young people, but to condition them and entertain them to the fullest, in order to hide the government‘s nonexistent popularity and to show their will to dominate behind scenes of the fireworks and the mercenary actors on stage.

The Catholic Church has also spoken on the same subject. According to the Auxiliary Bishop Silvio Báez, religious manipulation by the government is constant. The use of symbols, religious holidays, the words and the type of religious speech from the political powers are abusive and interfering. It is observable how they use and rely on the Catholic faith and traditions to present a ridiculous spectacle (circus) and give away the basic foods (bread) to the needy. They know very well that the receivers don’t know that it’s the same government that has raised the prices to an almost unreachable level and then "sympathize" publicly with the neediest.

Without objective thinking and a lack of clear vision of things, we are destined to witness the slow and inevitable destruction of the country. We allow the kidnapping of reason because of interest, or because of fear of true freedom of expression and thought. We fall into a voluntary servility and develop a need for a permanent show. The commercial and political advertising constantly bombards us and falsifies our sad reality. When citizens allow the insult of our intelligence and participate in vulgar spectacles of liars who manipulate media according to their interests, we are accepting being treated as stupid when in fact we are not. When we are carried by small interests and abandon ethics and critical thinking, we lose all dignity, contributing to the moral decay of our country.

We must see clearly that, sadly, the current trend of politics is to be insultingly theatrical in order to mobilize the masses and convince them with a brutalizing a message. Apparently "nice" slogans are used to trick the person into trusting a group thirsty for power and money, with a leader who is once again leading us to the precipice.

Elements of a dictatorship

Elements of a dictatorship

By: Cristiana Guevara-Mena

In our country, throughout history, we have been able to perceive that almost every other person that has reached the Presidency of the Republic has been considered the “sanctified,” “the chosen one”, and the only one capable of being in that position. It’s very common to see in these individuals demonstrations of a sickening will of perpetuation in power to the point that it becomes, besides a dementia and obsessive vice, the most important sickness in their lives, without taking into account the negative human and social effects that this sickness conveys. Lastly, they forget about the people that helped them get to the top and become President.

Many of those who have reached power, either by elections or by “coups d‘etat,” still suffer from the delusion of feeling indispensable to the national territory. That is, that without them and their correct direction, the country will sink between the two oceans; that the power belongs only to them, by right of inheritance or by their own intelligence, and that this power endows them with the right to impose their will upon others without the least idea or interest that the power represents a service, a responsibility, and an obligation to the people.

Unfortunately, the origin of dictatorship lies not only in the will of the dictator, but also in the will of those who he says he represents, whom he asphyxiates with advertised lies, blackmail, open or hidden threats, and the closing of opportunities to those who want to contradict the wishes of he that believes himself, as well as his family, close friends, and personnel, to be “sanctified.”

Despite the democratic disguise, what characterizes dictatorship is the triumph of the arbitrary act o a person over the due respect to the sense of the law, to which we should all be equal without any kind of consideration. We must understand that XXI century dictatorship, is no longer the violent threat of execution by firing squad or prison that existed during the somocista era, but the gradual reduction of individual liberties through the exclusion of jobs, police and fiscal terrorism, judicial threats and designation in which process the minimum guarantee of equity of shared values of democracy and justice are nonexistent.

Those who want to impose a dictatorship dedicate themselves to destroying, little by little, in a progressive and scientific form, the opposition parties, through the persons of their best representatives. Using threats, blackmail, or praise, they transform these persons into obedient, submissive, and buyable beings for the service of the interests of power.

To the foreigner, modern dictatorship is disguised with press self-censorship, and with the massive presence of officialist media, that shows an almost turned-off, scandalized opposition. In some occasions, independent international organisms without any links with the local power, publish numbers and real facts according to reality. In most cases, they are publications of organisms that need to justify their existence in the country, for which they are willing to ally themselves with the powers that be, and in turn publish fake facts that hide a sad reality. These last ones present the nation as a country in development, that reduces poverty, and that is magically solving all the inner problems of the country, putting their own credibility at risk and not caring about the democratic destiny of the nation where they are established.

How many times have the Nicaraguans been witnesses and victims of Presidents, either from the left or the right, that intended to be in power forever at the expense of a humiliated and impoverished people without education, that in these last few years have started to wake up?  What conclusions should we make from such a situation? We must keep in mind two things: Firstly, that when a country is suffering a dictatorship, it has an immense need of a promising change in order to improve, that comes from believable people, without black histories, with honesty and proven talent. Secondly, that between this division of the parties, a real organized force does not exist yet, or worse still, only one exists:  a disperse, confused, fearful people in need, who hope to find solutions to their daily problems. If the people are the ones that choose their leaders, they must also ensure  that they are the one that can change who their leaders are, in any way possible.

Employement or Dignity?

Employment or Dignity?

By: Cristiana Guevara-Mena

The problem of unemployment in Nicaragua has reached the point that the instinct of survival is much more important to people than their human dignity is. We live in an era where it is better to earn something and survive than it is to have nothing and suffer from poverty. In these times, choosing which job to have is a luxury. Since jobs are so scarce, the person must work in whatever job they find, and do the best they can, without giving consideration to how well or poorly the job pays, whether or not it puts their mental or physical health at risk, or having to sacrifice time with their family, just to earn a miserable salary (because it’s better than making nothing at all). What has become of us? Where is the value of human life? Does this crisis have a solution, or are its roots so deep that we are destined to live this way for a long time?

The youth, despite being the majority of the population, don’t have enough experience, by virtue of the fact that they’re young; as a consequence, they’re not being hired, or, if they are being hired, it is only in exchange for favors. When you hire personnel, in public and private enterprises, it is generally on the basis of friendship or a similar relationship, and not because of merit or competition. This makes the institutions not work properly, and causes them to fall under their own weight because of uselessness. This further delays the nation’s economic progress, and when the enterprise fails, it produces rising unemployment.

Companies do not have enough incentives to hire young people, even if the young people have university degrees. The vast majority of the youth between the ages of 16 and 35 are unemployed. Many of the ones that are lucky enough to be employed have a job that doesn’t pay them all that well, or doesn’t give them the opportunity to grow within the institution or company, or they are working in something without previous experience because there are no jobs available that are related to the field in which they studied. There are very few people who work in what they like and earn well doing it.

Currently, there are many young people unemployed throughout the national territory, and when some of them do find jobs, they end up working in something lower than what they are capable of, and are therefore paid very little. This is a consequence of the need that forces them to rent their brains and muscles for the miserable salary that they are offered. The dignified young people that choose not to pay that price have to bear to be unemployed for a long time, which produces an increasing amount of economic and psychological anguish.

Unfortunately, there are many who give in and accept the stingy alms they are offered in order to not starve to death, because if they don’t, they see themselves forced to commit crimes that will lead them to social delinquency. The country is filled with involuntarily delinquent youth that threaten the security of all the Nicaraguans, and it’s a danger that increases every day.
This painful and difficult situation generates the growth of delinquency at a national level and affects the street vendors who are in a very poor condition. The humiliation of allowing one’s self to be exploited for a few cents leads to the blockage and lack of motivation in the workplace, and above all, the will to emigrate to another country. This feeds great economic instability in the country, preventing it from using its human resources to advance, and maintaining control by a few with power and riches.

Irrespective of all this social and economic disgrace, there is a solution for the skilled youth. This consists in creating, with imagination and solidarity, even with little resources, their own businesses, with bold and original characteristics according to the result of their hard work and analysis of how to overcome poverty by doing what they can do best. This way, not only will they produce enough to survive in a micro-enterprise, but will also improve the quality of life of the youth.

This way, by triggering individual initiative and entrepreneural character, we will inevitably create new employment according to the social reality that we live in. By creating their own businesses, the young people they will become productive citizens independent of anyone, of both the public and private enterprises that give humiliating alms to eat, and free from being exploited without mercy by those with money and power, who continue to feast, fatten their bank accounts, and spend wastefully. This way, all the youth will become the social and economic solution that, little by little will take our dear Nicaragua out of the black hole where it finds itself.

¿Empleo o Dignidad?

http://www.laprensa.com.ni/2013/01/02/voces/129139--o-dignidad

¿Empleo o Dignidad?

The price of corruption

By: Cristiana Guevara-Mena

Corruption is a social disease that has worn out Nicaragua for many years. Therefore, it’s to suppose that the people are sick of so much generalized corruption. Leaders of all currents that have been in power in turn haven’t done anything else but to enrich themselves, forget about the people and the promises made in election season. This causes such destruction of the country that it’s hard to believe that Nicaragua will be reborn from the ashes.

What we haven’t perceived for being too busy with our everyday lives is that all this corruption has a price. This ironically good but dangerous part of corruption generates a state of profound resentment and anger of the people caused by misery, economic estrangement, and the continuous unaccomplished promises of the governments. To the point that there will be a moment where this feeling will be unbearable and it will rebel itself against everything that has been done, and against all the guilty parties.

There has been a complicity of the government with different sectors of the private enterprise, that without considering the responsibility that they have, have showed that they care more about the fattening of their bank accounts than the benefit of the nation, that is where their money comes from. They have bet in favor of a government over the citizen rights and needs of the great majority.

An evident example: in Nicaragua fuel is imported at a privileged price, how it is shipped to us by Venezuela, and it is sold to the citizens at an international market price. This is squandered on year round Christmas trees turned on in every roundabout of the country. Meanwhile, the citizens receive altered bills for a lousy service, and, if this were little, are as well threatened to take to prison for violation of the law. As consequence, this forces the poorest of the people to put their lives at risk by illegally connecting themselves to high tension cables that cross the enormous and very poor neighborhood extensions that round the capital. Even so, nor the government of the great capital are interested in replacing the imported oil that causes so much harm, for the rich natural resources that the sun, wind, water, and volcanoes can offer.

Let’s remember as well the bankruptcies’ of the banks caused by the corrupt politicians and entrepreneur’s bad administration that took advantage of the power to leave the people with a huge and offensively unpayable internal debt. Since there is no justice that has anything to say, the responsible parties continue with their bowties happily in the streets, and that money has been replaced with funds of the people. To that effect, there are existing documents of internal debt in hands of foreign creditors that at any moment will be able to demand the payment of the disappeared money.

These facts, product of the responsible people frantic race for money and power, brings a social time bomb about to explode that will not leave any of the guilty parties standing, and will bring more advance of poverty. On the other hand, the bright side of this is that it will give space for the upcoming young new leaderships with enough education to drive Nicaragua towards a new horizon of progress. It is there where the political youth of any color, with citizen responsibility and knowledge of their reality will generate new changes, since it is called to replace the old leading class generation that has been evidently unable until this moment to produce positive results for the nation.

Nicaragua's next generation: Leaders or serviles?

Nicaragua's next generation: Leaders or serviles?

By: Cristiana Guevara-Mena

There is something that we, the Nicaraguan youth of all political persuasions, have not understood, or that is not very clear to us. According to the Old School, taught to us by our predecessors, it’s necessary to be loyal and unconditional to a so-called leader or party, even having to stoop to a level of undignified submission in order to climb within the structures of the party and to achieve a relevant position in the institutions of the country. However, how feasible is this form to create leadership? Are our ancestors creating thinking leaders, or just robotic and servile entities, faithful to the will of their superiors?

We have inherited this vice from the current political participants in our country, many of whom have held office for more than fifteen years and confuse political leadership and party discipline with servility and submission. As a consequence, we understand these bad customs as our only reference for behavior; this disorients our actions and decision-making.

Let it be understood that the goal of party discipline is to achieve standards of behavior according to the political objectives and tendencies of the party, for the benefit of its members and of the nation. On the other hand, we understand that political leadership means recognizing in one person the qualities and special talents needed to guide for the benefit of the nation. It’s not an inheritable asset, nor a personal company, but a responsibility of public service.

In order to be a real political leader, one must have a clear notion of these concepts, and not confuse them with canine loyalty. This implies having enough knowledge, conviction, and courage to take risks, defend one’s own ideas, and work with others as a team to accomplish an objective.

It’s because of this that we, the young party members of the right and left, have been used as cannon fodder, as packs of hounds trained to attack; we are sent to protest in sit-ins, to act as delinquent mobs, to pray at the roundabouts, to saturate plazas, and to fill in the spaces of a television commercial. The worst part is that, lacking our own criteria, we are easily handled to vote in favor of or against a candidate in election season.

It’s essential that we the young people get educated by our own means in subjects that develop our criteria, so that we arrive at our own conclusions. With this, we will be able to make our own decisions, and take our own actions, with the creativity and imagination that will really make a difference. It’s necessary to fill ourselves with all sorts of information and develop a study habit. We must understand that knowledge is our best ally and that it feeds our individuality as human beings, not to mention enriches us as political subjects.

With an invasive, gangster government like the current one, it’s necessary to perform in a new, agile, and imaginative manner, to avoid repeating the mistakes of our political forefathers, because repeating those mistakes will get us nowhere. We must wake up our minds in order to be leaders and to think for ourselves: It’s the only way to provide evidence of the miserable morals and internal corruption of authority, so that we can challenge the authority from the inside with real and serious arguments. Let’s not look ridiculous to the media by doing sit-ins without continuity, by doing marches that accomplish nothing other than obstructing traffic, or by forming mobs that are nothing more than delinquents let loose. Leadership is in our capacity for taking different, rational and timely decisions.

Our current reality of political parties presents us with old and opportunistic men at the top who will never give us space, and to think that they will give us space because we are the next generation is dreamy and naïve. Therefore, we must represent something different, hit the table, impose ourselves with irrefutable ideas, and protest against the current system. Let’s not allow the mediocre, archaic and traditional behaviors to overwhelm our personalities if we become new politicians. The ideal way of thinking for us is to educate ourselves to develop criteria and character. It’s the only way to generate positive and substantial changes in politics, and above all, in our lives. There is no other way.
